BENGALURU — A 27-year-old woman has been arrested on murder charges after allegedly tying up her boyfriend, blindfolding him, and setting him on fire at her residence in northwest Bengaluru on Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, Prema and Kiran, both 27, were colleagues at a mobile service provider store in Rajajinagar and had been in a relationship for two years. The incident occurred after Prema invited Kiran to her home in Anjanagar, under the pretense of a “surprise” and “a excellent time,” following the departure of her mother and brother for work.

Police said Prema blindfolded Kiran and tied his hands and legs with a rope. When he questioned her actions, she reportedly reassured him it was “part of an act.” Shortly afterward, she allegedly poured an inflammable liquid — identified as kerosene or petrol — on him and set him ablaze.

Struggling to free himself, Kiran died on the spot. Neighbors alerted authorities after hearing his screams and noticing thick smoke. Fire and emergency services personnel arrived at the scene, where police initially suspected suicide based on Prema’s statement. But, inconsistencies in her account and further investigation contradicted her claim.

Investigators found that Prema had purchased the inflammable liquid in advance and allegedly recorded Kiran’s final moments on her mobile phone, which has been seized. During questioning, she claimed she was in the bathroom when she heard a loud noise. After sustained interrogation, she reportedly confessed to the crime.

“Investigation, prima facie, indicates the woman, in the guise of a romantic interlude, tied the victim and set him on fire. Further investigation is on,” a senior officer said.

The case has drawn attention due to the alleged use of a romantic ruse to commit a violent act, highlighting the dangers of manipulation in personal relationships. Authorities continue to examine evidence, including the seized mobile phone, as part of the ongoing investigation.
