Sparta Prague has secured a direct spot in the round of 16 of the UEFA Europa Conference League, a significant achievement for the Czech club. The team clinched their place after a decisive 2-0 victory over Aberdeen on February 8th, bringing their total points to 13 after six matches and landing them in second place in the 36-team competition.

The win, fueled by a goal from Lukáš Haraslín in the 29th minute, marked a turning point for Sparta Prague, particularly as their domestic league performance has been challenging. They currently trail Slavia Prague by seven points in the league standings.

Sporting Director Tomáš Rosický expressed optimism about the team’s prospects, stating to Nova Sport, “Given the current situation, a huge opportunity has opened up before us. If we defeat three teams, we are suddenly in the final. We want to get the players to understand that this is a unique chance that may not come again.”

Sparta Prague will learn their opponent for the knockout stage during the draw on February 27th, with matches scheduled for March. This advancement in European competition offers a boost to team morale and provides a platform for further success.

Elsewhere in Czech football, Slavia Prague is preparing for a Champions League clash against Barcelona in January. Viktoria Plzeň, currently undefeated in European competition, will compete in the Europa League. Meanwhile, Sigma Olomouc experienced a dramatic end to their European qualification hopes.

Olomouc initially faced relegation after a 1-2 home defeat against Lech Poznań. However, a last-minute goal by AEK Athens against Craiova in the 105th minute, securing a 3-2 victory, ultimately saved Olomouc from dropping to the bottom of the standings. The future of head coach Tomáš Janotka remains uncertain amidst the team’s struggles, but Sigma Olomouc will participate in a playoff for continued European contention in February.

Despite recent inconsistent form, Sparta Prague delivered a strong performance against Aberdeen, with approximately 2,000 fans traveling to support the team. Mercado opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a left-footed shot, followed by a goal from Haraslín, who was named player of the match. Kuol added a third goal as a substitute, solidifying Sparta Prague’s victory.
