IFK Helsinki’s struggles continued at the Spengler Cup, falling to Sparta Prague 4-1. The Finnish side, led by star coach Olli Jokinen, remains winless in nine straight games at the prestigious tournament. Sparta Prague rebounded from a 5-2 loss to Fribourg-Gottéron and earned their first points in Davos.
Krystof Hrabik opened the scoring for Sparta Prague just before the nine-minute mark, capitalizing on a rebound in front of the net.
Dzierkals Delivers
Helsinki, currently 13th in the 16-team Finnish league, attempted to respond in the middle frame. They came out with more energy, but Martins Dzierkals extended Sparta’s lead to 2-0 at 29:00. Jakub Krejcik set up the play with a beautiful pass from behind his own net, allowing Dzierkals to unleash a blistering 131 km/h wrist shot.
Sparta Prague carried the two-goal advantage into the second intermission. Daniel Mäkiaho briefly ignited hope for IFK Helsinki with a well-executed counterattack and a skillful individual effort, but Aaron Irving quickly extinguished it, restoring the two-goal cushion for Sparta just 48 seconds later.
Facing a depleted roster due to injuries, IFK Helsinki continued to struggle. They managed only one serious scoring chance in the final minutes, but their hopes faded with a penalty to Kalle Ervasti. Pavel Kousal sealed the victory with a late goal, making it 4-1 with just 28 seconds remaining.
What’s Next
Sparta Prague has completed their schedule in Group Torriani. IFK Helsinki will face defending champion Fribourg-Gottéron again on Sunday afternoon (starting at 3:10 PM live on SRF two and in the Sport App). Even a loss by two goals or less would still send Gottéron directly to Tuesday’s semifinals.
