Tensions have reached a boiling point in the Czech Extraliga playoffs as HC Sparta Praha and HC Dynamo Pardubice clash in a high-stakes series defined by on-ice drama and off-ice controversy. Following a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss in the fifth semifinal game, Sparta finds themselves trailing 3-2 in the series and facing potential elimination.
Nedvěd Slams “Insane” Officiating
Sparta head coach Jaroslav Nedvěd did not hold back after the game, labeling the performance of referees Robin Šír and Tomáš Cabák as “insane.” Nedvěd specifically pointed to a series of controversial calls, including a penalty on Tomáš Hyka in the 53rd minute that led to a 3-2 lead for Dynamo via Roman Červenka, and unpenalized attacks by John Ludvig and Dvořák during a Jakub Krejčík breakaway in overtime.
The game ultimately ended in the 74th minute when Tomáš Vondráček scored into an empty net. Sparta’s attempt at a coach’s challenge—claiming Ludvig illegally hindered goaltender Josef Kořenář—was unsuccessful. “Unfortunately, the referees stepped into it in overtime,” Nedvěd stated during the press conference, suggesting that “one-sided targeted media pressure” had clouded the officials’ judgment.
Hefty Fines and Bold Defiance
The league office responded swiftly to Nedvěd’s outburst. The competition director slapped Sparta with a total fine of 110,000 CZK. This includes a 10,000 CZK penalty for violating league rules by criticizing officials on the day of the match, and a steeper 100,000 CZK fine for “damaging the good name of the competition.”

Despite the financial blow, Nedvěd remains defiant. In a bold move to support his staff and stand by his words, he announced he would personally cover the costs, stating he would send 200,000 CZK—far exceeding the fine—as a statement for the truth and for future instances.
A Rivalry Fuelled by Emotion
The conflict extends beyond the coaching staff, with the atmosphere in the arenas becoming increasingly hostile. Fans have targeted Dynamo owner Petr Dědek with provocative choreography and sharp slogans, while the rivalry has sparked intense emotions across the region. The clash between the leadership of the two clubs has turned the series into a psychological battle as much as an athletic one.
As Sparta fights to maintain their season alive, the focus remains on whether they can overcome the momentum of a Pardubice side that now stands on the brink of advancing to the finals.
