A last-minute change has shaken up the Superliga Profesional de Baloncesto (SPB) as Frontinos del Táchira will not participate in the 2026 season. The team’s withdrawal forces a restructuring of the league’s schedule just days before the season’s tip-off.
The SPB announced the decision, citing “recent public events” as the reason for Frontinos del Táchira’s absence in the upcoming championship, scheduled to begin on Saturday, March 7th. This news comes as teams finalize preparations for a competitive season.
SPB Format Changes
Frontinos was slated to compete in the Western Conference and was scheduled to open the season on March 7th against Trotamundos de Carabobo at the Fórum de Valencia. The SPB stated that adjustments to the regular season schedule will be published soon through its official channels.
“The Board of Directors, exercising the extraordinary powers conferred upon it by the SPB statutes, has resolved that, in light of recent public events that will prevent Frontinos del Táchira from participating in the SPB 2026 championship, scheduled to begin next Saturday, March 7th; the competition format and consequently its calendar will necessarily undergo a change,” the SPB explained in a statement released on its social media platforms.
Teams Remaining in the SPB
With Frontinos’ departure, the Superliga will consist of 13 teams for the 2026 season, divided into two conferences: six teams in the Western region (Brillantes, Cocodrilos, Gaiteros, Héroes, Pioneros, Trotamundos) and seven teams in the Eastern zone, comprised of Marinos, Centauros, Diablos, Guaqueríes, Panteras, Piratas, and Spartans.
