Spectacularly colorful sunsets have been captivating residents across southern Norway in recent evenings. The vibrant displays are the result of a unique combination of weather patterns, including low-pressure systems in the north and stable high pressure in the south, filtering the sunlight. Meteorologists explain the phenomenon is especially noticeable during the winter months due to the sun’s low position on the horizon, and forecasts suggest these breathtaking skies may continue in the days ahead.
The skies over parts of southern Norway have been putting on a spectacular show in recent evenings, captivating residents and photographers alike.
Several factors are combining to create the vibrant displays.
“It’s actually the weather system in northern Norway that’s making things so beautiful in the south right now,” says meteorologist Per Egil Haga. “The clouds creating these beautiful skies in the evenings are coming from low-pressure systems in the north.”

When the sun is low on the horizon, as it is during the winter months, the resulting colors in the clouds are particularly striking, according to Haga.
“When the sun passes through the atmosphere, some of the blue light in the sun’s rays is gradually removed, so when the sun is at a low angle, much of the blue light is filtered out,” he explained.
This allows more of the red light to come through, creating very red skies.
“We also see this during sunsets at other times of the year, but perhaps even more clearly now that the sun is low on the horizon all day,” Haga said.
