A tragic accident in Indonesia has shaken the Spanish soccer world. Fernando Martín, 44, head coach of Valencia CF’s B team for women, died in a boating incident along with three of his four children – ages 12, 10, and 9. His wife and youngest daughter, age 7, along with five other passengers, were able to survive, according to local reports. The vessel went down Friday night due to rough seas near Padar Island, within the Komodo National Park in the eastern part of the country.

Enrique Ortuno, the wife’s father, shared details with the Efe news agency: “My daughter and granddaughter were thrown from the boat because they were in a higher section. They fell into the sea and were rescued, but my three grandchildren and my son-in-law were likely trapped inside the boat, which broke apart and sank quickly.”

Team Statement

Valencia CF confirmed the devastating news with a statement: “Valencia CF is deeply saddened by the death of Fernando Martín, coach of Valencia CF Women B, and three of his children in a tragic boating accident in Indonesia, as confirmed by local authorities. In this difficult time for everyone, the Club wants to express its support and deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Valencia CF, Valencia CF Women and Academia VCF.”

The loss is a profound blow to the Valencia CF organization and the Spanish women’s soccer community. Martín was a key figure in developing young talent within the club’s academy system, and his dedication will be sorely missed. The incident underscores the unpredictable dangers of maritime travel, even in popular tourist destinations like Komodo National Park.
