Stena Line Completes Acquisition of Wasaline
Stena Line has officially acquired Wasaline, a ferry operator connecting Sweden and Finland, following approvals from city councils and regulatory bodies. The deal, initially announced in November 2025, marks a significant consolidation in the Baltic Sea ferry market and secures a vital transport link between the two countries.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony in Umeå on February 9, 2026, formally confirmed the completion of the acquisition. Swedish Minister of Infrastructure Andreas Carlsson stated, “The close and strong cooperation between Sweden and Finland is of central strategic importance to both our countries. Robust and reliable transport links are a fundamental prerequisite for a competitive business sector as well as for strengthened preparedness and security. Ferry traffic between Sweden and Finland is attractive and viable, as underscored by today’s ceremony.”
Joakim Strand, Finland’s Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering, similarly emphasized the importance of the Vaasa–Umeå ferry route for both the region and the broader relationship between Finland and Sweden.
The acquisition involves taking over the operation of the ferry service between Umeå and Vaasa. Wasaline, which operates under the auxiliary name NLC Ferry Oy, will continue to operate under its existing brand, albeit with minor adjustments, as part of Stena Line’s European ferry network, which comprises 20 routes and 40 vessels. The move strengthens Stena Line’s position in the Baltic Sea region.
The vessel Aurora Botnia, which operates on the route, will continue to be owned by Kvarken Link, a company jointly owned by the cities of Umeå and Vaasa. According to the agreement, the ferry will maintain its current timetable, with 20–26 departures per week.
“It is with great joy and enthusiasm that we at Stena Line seize on the responsibility for Wasaline and the route between two important regions and cities, Umeå and Vaasa,” said Niclas Mårtensson, CEO of Stena Line. “It is strategically important to ensure that the service between Vaasa and Umeå continues and has the possibility to grow in the future.”
Wasaline entered into a biogas agreement with Gasum and a Fuel EU Maritime pooling agreement with Stena Line in July 2025, establishing the Umeå–Vaasa route as the first international green shipping corridor. Aurora Botnia is a hybrid vessel powered by biogas and batteries, reflecting a commitment to sustainable shipping practices. The acquisition further enhances Stena Line’s access to alternative fuels and its position as a leader in sustainability within the ferry industry, according to the company.
“With Wasaline, we not only gain a vessel equipped with the latest environmental technology and capable of sailing CO₂-neutral on a regular basis, we also enhance our access to alternative fuels,” added Mårtensson. “we gain a strong intermodal transport link toward Gothenburg and Trelleborg, and onwards to the European continent.”
Stena Line completed the purchase of NLC Ferry Oy/Wasaline on February 9, 2026, bringing Wasaline’s employees, passengers and customers into the group, as reported by Port News.
