Chile Launches Digital Gas Subsidy to Help Vulnerable Families With Winter Heating
The Chilean government is transitioning its winter heating assistance to a digital format, providing millions of the country’s most vulnerable citizens with electronic vouchers for liquefied gas starting in June 2026.

Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado confirmed the details of the Liquefied Gas Subsidy, a measure designed to alleviate the financial burden of heating costs during the colder months. The program is expected to reach approximately 7.5 million people across Chile.
In a significant shift from previous years, the government has eliminated the delivery of physical gas cylinders and the use of municipal operations for distribution. Instead, the benefit will be managed through BancoEstado. The subsidy, which is equivalent to the cost of one 15-kilogram liquefied gas cylinder, will be delivered as an electronic voucher deposited into RutPay, the digital wallet linked to the Cuenta RUT.
To ensure the funds are used for their intended purpose, the electronic payment is restricted exclusively to the purchase of gas and can be redeemed at any authorized distributor in the country at the beneficiary’s convenience. This transition to a digital system underscores a broader move toward streamlining social welfare delivery through financial technology.
Eligibility for the subsidy is determined automatically via the Social Registry of Households (RSH). The benefit is directed at the head of household for those falling within the 80% most vulnerable socio-economic bracket. Because the system identifies beneficiaries using existing RSH data, no formal application process is required.
