Chilean families facing economic hardship have access too a key support system through the government’s Family Allowance (SUF) program. The SUF, which began distributing payments in december 2023, provides vital monthly stipends to qualifying households with children . This report details the two pathways to receive these benefits – the Traditional and Automatic SUF – outlining eligibility requirements and application processes for those seeking assistance.

Families in need of financial assistance have access to several support programs offered by the government. Among these, the Family Allowance (SUF) has become a widely utilized resource, providing monthly payments that directly impact household finances.

The SUF program is offered in two forms: the Traditional Family Allowance and the Automatic Family Allowance. While both aim to support children and provide social protection, they differ in how benefits are distributed.

Understanding the Differences Between Traditional and Automatic SUF

The primary distinction between the two programs lies in the application process.

  • The Traditional SUF requires a direct application at the relevant municipality.

  • The Automatic SUF, however, is immediately granted to families who meet the criteria outlined in the Social Household Registry (RSH).

Regardless of the type, both subsidies have specific characteristics and requirements that applicants should understand before applying or inquiring about payments.

How to Access the Traditional Family Allowance

This benefit is intended for mothers, fathers, or guardians without social security benefits who fall within the most vulnerable 60% according to the RSH. The current amount of the Traditional SUF is $22,007 per dependent, increasing to $44,014 for an accredited person with a disability.

To qualify, dependents – also known as subsidy recipients – must meet the following conditions:

  • Children under 8 years old: must participate in the Ministry of Health’s childhood health programs.
  • Children over 6 years old: must be regularly enrolled in recognized basic, secondary, or higher education, unless they have a disability.

Applications must be submitted in person at the municipality of residence, along with the following documents:

  • Birth certificate of the child or adolescent.
  • Photocopy of the child’s health check-up card (for children under 6 years old).
  • Certificate of regular student enrollment (for children over 6 and under 18 years old).
  • Declaration from COMPIN in case of intellectual disability.
  • Document proving legal guardianship.

Payment dates can be checked by entering the RUT number on the official ChileAtiende website.

How the Automatic Family Allowance Works

The Automatic SUF is provided to families in the most vulnerable 40% of the RSH who have children under 18 years old. This program shares the same age and school attendance requirements as the Traditional SUF, but does not require an application. Payments are deposited directly and have the following restrictions:

  • The child must not receive Family Allowance payments.
  • The child cannot receive the Disability Subsidy for children under 18 years old.

Payments began in December 2023. Families can confirm their eligibility by entering the RUT and date of birth of the child on the official state platform.

Where to Check Your Family Allowance Status

Families wishing to verify their receipt of the Traditional SUF or the Automatic SUF can do so on the state’s digital platforms. Simply enter the RUT and date of birth on the portals provided by ChileAtiende and the Ministry of Social Development. These resources allow individuals to check available payments and address any questions regarding their benefits, ensuring easier access to this important social support.
