Team Japan Celebrates Ahead of WBC Title Defense with Generous Gesture

Osaka, Japan – As Team Japan prepares to defend its title at the World Baseball Classic (WBC), the team held a celebratory gathering in Osaka on March 1, 2026, marked by a notable act of generosity from veteran pitcher Shogo Kanoh. According to reports, Kanoh covered the bill for a team dinner, a gesture acknowledged by outfielder Masataka Yoshida with a social media post stating, “Kanoh-san is treating!”

The team is now complete with the arrival of players from Major League Baseball, including Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers, and Yuhei Okamoto of the Toronto Blue Jays. Ohtani shared photos from the event on his Instagram account (@shoheiohtani), expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming competition: “Let’s all work hard together again from tomorrow.”

The financial commitment from Kanoh, 36, the team’s oldest member, was highlighted by Yoshida’s post and further confirmed by other sources. This display of camaraderie comes as the team prepares for its first-round game against Taiwan on March 6 at the Tokyo Dome. Major League players will be eligible to participate in an exhibition game on March 2.

Team Japan previously held a preparatory gathering in Miyazaki, where advisors like Yu Darvish were present. The team’s unity is seen as crucial as they aim for a repeat championship. This strong team spirit is particularly important as baseball continues to be a major source of national pride and physical activity in Japan.

The current roster includes a record eight Major League players: Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Yuhei Kikuchi, Seiya Suzuki, Yuhei Okamoto, Yuki Matsui, Munetaka Murakami, and Shogo Kanoh. This surpasses the previous high of five Major League players on a Japanese WBC team, set in 2009 and 2023.
