Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf will turn 80 on April 30, 2026, marking five decades as the nation’s head of state. Celebrations are planned to commemorate the milestone, offering a glimpse into the life and reign of the long-serving monarch.

Festivities will commence with a “Te Deum” thanksgiving service for invited guests in the Royal Chapel, followed by a military salute on the Outer Courtyard. The changing of the guard will also capture place, with opportunities for children to present flowers to the King. A flyover by the Air Force and a salute from the Armed Forces are scheduled for 12:30 p.m., according to the Royal Court’s website.

The King ascended to the throne on September 15, 1973, and his upcoming birthday is being marked with a year of events. The celebrations on April 30th will also include a song performance and an opportunity for the public to offer their congratulations from Lejonbacken terrace.

Prior to the official birthday celebrations, a more informal event will take place with a simpler buffet, Aftonbladet reported. The King was also recently honored by Swedish radio personality Christer Lundberg, who shared his experience meeting the monarch.

Ulf Karl Olov Nilsson, also known as UKON, a Swedish author, psychologist, and psychoanalyst, reflected on the King’s life in an article, noting that it all began with a boy who was not allowed to grieve. According to Göteborgs-Posten, Nilsson’s piece explores the emotional landscape of the King’s early life.

In a column for Dagens Nyheter, Niklas Ekdal described the King’s 80th birthday as a celebration of both solitude and success. Ekdal’s article suggests a complex narrative surrounding the monarch’s long reign.
