Swiss International Air Lines has begun a major overhaul of its long-haul fleet with the inaugural flight of its new Airbus A350-900 to Boston on November 27th. The airline plans to integrate a total of ten of these modern aircraft, gradually replacing its aging A340s.
The new aircraft was assembled in Toulouse, France, and observers were recently given a behind-the-scenes look at the manufacturing process, described as assembling the plane “almost like Lego bricks.”
The highly anticipated arrival of the A350 at Zurich Airport took place in early October, where it was greeted by a flypast from the Swiss Air Force and drew hundreds of spectators to the airport’s viewing terrace.
Following its arrival, the aircraft’s completely redesigned cabin interior was unveiled. The plane also received its official name, “Lausanne,” in a naming ceremony attended by tennis star Stan Wawrinka, who served as the aircraft’s “godfather.”
