The gaming community’s dedication to hardware modification continues to yield extraordinary results, blurring the lines between manufacturer innovation and fan-led ingenuity. A skilled modder, known as Kouzex, recently completed a complex project repurposing older technology. Kouzex successfully integrated a fully functional Nintendo Switch – specifically a Switch Lite model – into the casing of a discontinued Wii U GamePad, offering a unique blend of nostalgia and modern gaming capability. The resulting “sleeper build” maintains the original GamePad’s ergonomics while providing access to the Nintendo Switch library.

The world of video game modding continues to impress, with creators consistently pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and often exceeding the innovation seen from larger companies. A recent project from modder Kouzex exemplifies this spirit, demonstrating a remarkable level of ingenuity and technical skill.

Kouzex has successfully integrated a fully functional Nintendo Switch into the shell of a Wii U GamePad. The resulting hybrid console is compatible with all digital Switch games and maintains a largely unmodified appearance, with all buttons remaining operational. The modder opted to use a Switch Lite, which doesn’t rely on detachable Joy-Cons, simplifying the integration process.

“This turned out amazing,” Kouzex stated about the creation. “It barely looks modified and definitely fits into what I’d call a sleeper build. The printed frame and larger bezels aren’t too noticeable, and I think it would fool most people, if they even know what a Wii U is to begin with. Literally every button on the Gamepad corresponds to a button on the Switch. Everything is mapped one-to-one, except the TV button, which is a capture button.”

The project stemmed from a desire to address a common preference among gamers: the ergonomics of the Wii U GamePad. Many users have expressed a fondness for the GamePad’s design, and Kouzex is pleased with the outcome, stating the device “definitely is coming with me next time I’m on a plane.” This kind of customization highlights the enduring appeal of older consoles and the creative potential of the modding community.

The process and final result are showcased in the video below. The ability to repurpose and reimagine older hardware speaks to a growing trend of sustainability and user-driven innovation within the gaming industry.
