Large Fire Breaks Out at Tainan City Landfill, Air Quality Alert Expected

A significant fire erupted at the Chenxi Landfill in Tainan City, Taiwan, on Thursday, February 8, sending plumes of smoke into the air and prompting authorities to prepare an air quality warning. The blaze, reaching an estimated 20 meters (approximately 65 feet) in height, is the latest in a series of fires impacting the region.

Firefighters are currently battling the flames at the landfill, according to reports from United News Network. The fire follows a ten-day blaze in Wutree Forest, Anan District, which began earlier this month.

The Tainan City Government has stated that the fire at the Chenxi Landfill does not currently threaten a nearby area designated for asbestos waste, according to Central News Agency.

Residents across Tainan City have reported a pervasive plastic odor, prompting a response from the Environmental Protection Bureau. The Commercial Times reported that the bureau is preparing to issue an air pollution alert.

A separate fire also broke out at the city’s third landfill late Wednesday, February 7, with flames and thick smoke visible throughout the night, as detailed in reports from ETtoday News Cloud.

The series of fires has raised concerns among local residents and authorities about waste management practices and potential environmental impacts. The ongoing situation underscores the challenges faced by the city in addressing landfill fires and maintaining air quality.
