Ben Stiller Warns of ‘Chilling Effect’ on Comedy During Second Trump Term
Actor and director Ben Stiller expressed concern today that comedy is facing increased challenges in the current political climate, particularly during a second term under Donald Trump.
In an interview with Radio Times magazine, Stiller stated, “We live in a world where taking chances with comedy is more challenging. You’re seeing that front and center in our country.” He urged comedians to continue their work, emphasizing the importance of “speaking truth to power and being free to say what they want.” This comes as debates continue regarding the boundaries of comedic expression and potential repercussions for controversial material.
Stiller’s comments follow the recent brief suspension of Jimmy Kimmel by Disney after the late-night host made remarks about Charlie Kirk. Stiller publicly supported Kimmel, posting on X/Twitter that “This isn’t right.” He also revealed he has resisted calls to remove a cameo appearance by Trump from his 2001 film, Zoolander, stating, “That was a time that existed and that happened.”
Stiller was speaking in connection with the promotion of his new Apple TV documentary, Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost, which explores the lives and careers of his comedian parents, Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. The documentary highlights a legacy of fearless comedic expression, a tradition Stiller feels is increasingly at risk, as reported by The Guardian.
Representatives for Disney and Donald Trump have not yet responded to requests for comment on Stiller’s remarks.
