The Thai Journalists Association has issued a strong condemnation of the use of information operations (IO) to harass members of the press, following a series of targeted attacks against a reporter who questioned military leadership regarding a political assassination attempt.
The association’s Rights, Freedom, and Media Reform division expressed deep concern over the “violent” harassment directed at Tapanee Iadsinchai, a reporter with The Reporters. The backlash began after Ms. Iadsinchai questioned the 4th Army Region Commander, in his capacity as the Director of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4, during a press conference regarding the attempted shooting of Kamonsak Leewama, a Prachachat Party MP for Narathiwat.
According to reports, the tension escalated when the 4th Army Region Commander responded to the questioning by stating, “If it were me, I wouldn’t let them get away,” a comment the association suggests created public alarm given the commander’s high-ranking position within the military.
Following the exchange, a coordinated wave of social media pages began publishing defamatory content against Ms. Iadsinchai. The association characterized these actions as a deliberate attempt to distort facts and intimidate journalists performing their professional duties. This incident underscores the growing tension between state security apparatuses and press freedom in Thailand’s volatile southern regions.
In response to the smear campaign, Ms. Iadsinchai has announced she is gathering evidence against the IO pages. She intends to pursue legal action, noting that some of the harassment has escalated to death threats.
The Thai Journalists Association has called on relevant authorities to urgently investigate and terminate these information operations, demanding an conclude to the use of state-linked or coordinated digital campaigns to silence the media.
