Thailand Women’s Football: Loss to Philippines, Bronze Medal Match vs Indonesia – SEA Games 2025

The Thailand women’s national football team saw their SEA Games gold medal aspirations end today in a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to the Philippines at Chonburi Stadium. despite a 1-0 lead secured by Jiraporn Mongkoldee, a late handball call led to a Philippine equalizer and ultimately, a 5-3 defeat in penalties. the team will now shift focus to a bronze medal match against Indonesia on December 17th, seeking to finish their campaign on a high note after a competitive showing in the semi-finals.

Thailand Women’s Football Team Falls to Philippines in Penalty Shootout, 3-5 on Aggregate; Will Compete for Bronze Against Indonesia at the 2025 SEA Games

Chonburi, Thailand – December 14, 2024 – The Thailand women’s national team saw their hopes for a SEA Games gold medal dashed today, falling to the Philippines 5-3 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw at Chonburi Stadium. The result sends Thailand into the bronze medal match, where they will face Indonesia.

Thailand entered the semi-final as the Group A winners, while the Philippines advanced as the runners-up from Group B. Coach Nuengruethai Sathongwian deployed Saowaluck Pengngam up front, supported by Natalie Hongsuwan and Patranan Uphachai.

The starting XI featured:
Suphaporn Intraphrasit, Panittha Jeeratanaphiboon, Pleumjai Sontisawat, Jiraporn Mongkoldee, Chatchawal Rodthong, Sunisa Srangthaisong, Saowaluck Pengngam, Tichanan Sodsuk (GK), Pitsamai Sornsai (C), Patranan Uphachai, Natalie Hongsuwan

The match began at a frantic pace, with both sides quickly pushing forward. In the 12th minute, Pleumjai Sontisawat unleashed a shot that rattled the crossbar. Thailand began to control possession, and in the 29th minute, the Philippines’ Pino’ Alessa Marie headed a chance just wide of Tichanan Sodsuk’s goal.

Natalie Hongsuwan nearly broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, but her left-footed effort sailed over the bar. Thailand continued to press, and in the 39th minute, Sunisa Srangthaisong’s curling free kick struck the crossbar again, with no follow-up as the first half ended scoreless.

The second half saw early chances for the Philippines, with Angela Rachel Baird testing Sodsuk from a corner kick in the 47th minute. Seconds later, Sarina Krystine Egge’s right-footed shot also glanced off the crossbar.

Thailand finally found the breakthrough in the 53rd minute. A defensive miscue from the Philippines allowed Jiraporn Mongkoldee to pounce on a loose ball and slot it home, giving Thailand a 1-0 lead.

The Thai side almost doubled their advantage in the 63rd minute, but Jiraporn Mongkoldee’s attempt was narrowly off target. Substitute Kanyanat Chethbutr created another opportunity in the 65th minute, setting up Natalie Hongsuwan, but her shot was saved by Olivia McDaniel.

The Philippines responded with a long-range effort from Jael Marie Guy in the 81st minute, which also hit the crossbar. Thailand continued to threaten, with Natalie Hongsuwan hitting the bar again in the 85th minute, and Kanyanat Chethbutr following suit with a header shortly after.

However, the equalizer arrived in the 87th minute when Panittha Jeeratanaphiboon was called for a handball, leading to a penalty kick converted by Jael Marie Guy, leveling the score at 1-1 and forcing the match into extra time.

Extra time saw both teams battling fiercely, with Jackrine Katrina Sawicki hitting the crossbar for the Philippines in the 115th minute. A quick counterattack saw Jiraporn Mongkoldee attempt a reply, but no further goals were scored, sending the match to a penalty shootout.

The Philippines proved more clinical in the shootout, converting four of their attempts, while Thailand managed only two. The result sends the Philippines through to the gold medal match against Vietnam, while Thailand will now compete for the bronze against Indonesia.

Thailand’s next match will be a bronze medal playoff against Indonesia at Chonburi Stadium on December 17, 2024, at 3:30 PM local time.
