“The Witcher” Season 4 Launches on Netflix with New Lead Actor

The fourth season of the fantasy drama “The Witcher” premiered today on Netflix, marking a significant shift for the series with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill.

The new season opens with a flashback recounting the events of the first three seasons, establishing the current timeline and focusing on the separate journeys of Geralt, Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan). Geralt, recovering from injuries inflicted by Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu), embarks on a quest with Jaskier (Joey Batey) and Milva (Meng’er Zhang) to find Ciri before she falls into the hands of Vilgefortz or Emperor Emhyr (Bart Edwards). Meanwhile, Yennefer gathers fellow mages, including Philippa (Cassie Claire) and Fringilla (Mimî M. Khayisa), at Aretuza to strategize against Vilgefortz.

Ciri, now going by the alias Falka, has abandoned her identity and powers, seeking refuge with a band of thieves known as the Rats. This season explores her attempts to forge her own path, independent of her lineage and the expectations placed upon her due to her Elder blood. The casting change comes after Cavill’s departure in 2022, a move that sparked considerable discussion among fans of the series, which is based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski.

Critics have noted the season as a reset for the show, streamlining storylines and offering a more focused narrative. New characters, including Regis (Laurence Fishburne) and Zoltan (Danny Woodburn), are introduced, adding depth to the expansive world. The series’ future is already planned, with this season setting the stage for a fifth and final installment. The success of “The Witcher” has significantly boosted Netflix’s fantasy offerings, attracting a large global audience.

The eight-episode season is now available for streaming, and Netflix officials have indicated they are confident in Hemsworth’s portrayal of Geralt and the direction of the story moving forward.
