‘Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow’ Release Date Announced for December 4

The long-awaited return to the pioneering stealth franchise, Thief, will arrive as a virtual reality exclusive on December 4, publisher Vertigo Games announced today.

Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow places players in the role of Magpie, a skilled thief operating in a city controlled by Baron Ulysses Northcrest, described as “a tyrant who crushes rebellion before it can take root.” The game’s narrative unfolds roughly halfway between the events of the original Thief trilogy and the 2014 reboot, centering around Magpie’s discovery of a legendary eye artifact with ties to the past. This marks a significant shift for the series, previously known for its first- and third-person gameplay, now fully embracing immersive VR technology.

Gameplay footage showcased on Meta Quest platforms demonstrates the VR mechanics, and the title will be available on Meta Quest, PS VR, and SteamVR upon release. The game is currently available for pre-order on Steam and Meta for $27, with a list price of $30; pricing and pre-order availability for the PlayStation Store version have not yet been announced. Officials at Vertigo Games stated they anticipate a strong reception from VR enthusiasts and long-time Thief fans alike.

Much like Half-Life: Alyx, Thief’s long-awaited return is a VR exclusive. The game was announced in June, but now we know when it will arrive. You can play the pioneering stealth franchise’s new chapter, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, on December 4.

Thief VR takes place about halfway between the events of the original trilogy and Thief (2014). You play as Magpie, a cunning thief (duh), who discovers a legendary eye artifact with a mysterious connection to the past. You’re operating in a city that’s under the grip of Baron Ulysses Northcrest, “a tyrant who crushes rebellion before it can take root.” That all sounds like an ideal backdrop for sneaking around and stealing shit.

Publisher Vertigo Games offered a glimpse at Meta Quest gameplay, which you can watch below. Thief VR will also be available on PS VR and SteamVR when it arrives on December 4. The title has a $30 list price on Steam and Meta, but can be pre-ordered now for $27. The PlayStation Store version doesn’t yet have pricing or reservation info.
