On February 27, 2026, Game Freak announced Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves as the first titles in the tenth generation of the Pokémon video game series, coinciding with the franchise’s 30th anniversary. The games are set for release in 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2 and will be set in a tropical archipelago region resembling Southeast Asia, featuring numerous islands with accessible underwater areas.

The starter Pokémon for the new titles were revealed at announcement: Browt (Grass-type), Pombon (Fire-type), and Gecqua (Water-type). Players will be able to use a Rotom Scooter that adapts and transforms based on the environment and the attached Pokémon’s moveset, including underwater travel capabilities.

Recent developments include a fan theory suggesting potential new characters and an Eeveelution based on the latest teaser from Pokémon Japan’s anime team, which introduced the “Wonder Voyage” arc of Pokémon Horizons. The teaser, released on April 17, 2026, features Ditto at the center of a poster, with a new character behind it sparking speculation about a possible Generation X Pokémon debut in the anime before its game appearance.

This follows a pattern where the anime has previously introduced new Pokémon ahead of their game releases, such as Ho-Oh appearing in the first episode of the anime before becoming available in Pokémon Gold and Silver. The announcement of Pokémon Winds and Waves came after a major data leak in 2024 that revealed information about the titles in development.

The games represent Nintendo and The Pokémon Company’s continued expansion of the franchise on next-generation hardware, with development handled by Game Freak for the Nintendo Switch 2 platform.
