Tokyo Family Arrested for Confining Disabled Teenage Girl in Modified Closet
Tokyo police have arrested a couple and their adult son on suspicion of unlawfully confining a teenage girl with a disability, keeping her restrained in a modified closet at their family home in the Machida area.
The arrests, announced on May 13, 2026, involve the girl’s parents, both in their 40s and her older brother, who is in his 20s. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the family allegedly used homemade devices to restrain the girl and monitored her movements using a surveillance camera.
During questioning, the mother reportedly admitted to investigators that the closet had been specifically modified in September 2025 to facilitate the confinement. When asked about the motive behind the treatment, the family claimed the measures were taken for the purpose of “discipline.”
The victim was discovered with significant physical injuries, including bruises and signs of bone fractures across her body. She was transported for medical treatment after the situation came to light.
The case has highlighted a critical failure in the local child protection system. Authorities confirmed that a child consultation center had previously been notified of suspected abuse at the residence. However, the center failed to conduct a visit before the girl was rescued, raising serious questions about the timing and efficacy of intervention protocols.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges facing social services in identifying and intervening in domestic abuse cases before they escalate into severe physical harm.
