A Japanese tuner has unveiled a rugged new take on the Toyota GR86, designed to tackle even the most challenging terrain.
The line between sports car performance and off-road capability is blurring, with manufacturers like Porsche and Lamborghini demonstrating that both worlds can coexist. Models like the 911 Dakar and Huracan Sterrato have proven that a thrilling driving experience doesn’t have to be limited to paved roads.
Now, Japanese tuner Kuhl Racing has taken on the challenge, transforming a Toyota GR86 into a vehicle ready for serious off-road adventures. This customization caters to drivers seeking both performance and rugged capability.
The Toyota GR86 Outroad: Key Features
The project centers around a lifted suspension for the coupe. Kuhl Racing has installed a custom suspension setup that raises the GR86 approximately 2.5 inches (7.5 cm). An optional hydraulic lift system is also available, providing an additional 1.6 inches (4 cm) of ground clearance when needed.

Kuhl Racing focused on bolstering the vehicle’s durability. Wider fender flares accommodate larger tires, while redesigned front and rear bumpers improve approach and departure angles. Skid plates, cladding, and auxiliary lights complete the rugged aesthetic. The vehicle maintains a sporty look with rally-inspired touches. A roof rack adds both functionality and visual impact.
The GR86 retains its standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, but Kuhl Racing offers an optional turbo kit for a power boost of approximately 50 horsepower, along with upgrades to the cooling system and engine control unit. Customers can choose between a manual or automatic transmission. The Toyota GR86 Outroad will be showcased at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026.
The complete Outroad kit is priced at approximately $28,700 USD, while the body kit alone costs around $12,600 USD. Wheels are an additional $3,000 USD, and the turbo upgrade adds $8,900 USD.
