Giants Face Trade Deadline Decisions Amidst Player Struggles and Injury Concerns

The New York Giants are weighing potential trades involving wide receiver Jalin Hyatt and offensive guard Evan Neal as the NFL trade deadline approaches on Tuesday, compounded by a growing list of injuries impacting the team’s depth.

Both Hyatt, a 2023 third-round pick, and Neal, a 2022 first-round pick, were healthy scratches in last week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Hyatt has 11 catches for 79 yards in 21 games, while Neal has struggled to find a consistent role after transitioning from right tackle to right guard this offseason. The Giants’ willingness to move on from high draft picks so early in their careers signals a potential reset for the team’s rebuilding efforts.

The team also faces roster decisions ahead of Saturday, as cornerback Rico Payton is expected to be activated from injured reserve, requiring a corresponding roster move. Adding to the team’s woes, cornerbacks Paulson Adebo (knee), Cor’Dale Flott (concussion), and Art Green (hamstring), along with defensive lineman Chauncey Golston (neck), have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Tight end Daniel Bellinger (neck) and offensive tackle Jermaine Eluemunor (pec) are listed as doubtful. The depleted secondary may force the team to start Korie Black, recently signed from the New York Jets practice squad, according to ESPN’s Giants roster page.

Despite the challenges, coaches remain publicly supportive of the players. Receivers coach Mike Groh stated, “There’s just a number of factors that would be involved,” regarding Hyatt’s lack of impact, adding, “But there’s still time for him. The player I’ve seen, the person I’ve been around, he handled [a healthy scratch] like a pro.” Offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo said of Neal, “We asked Evan to make the transition. I think he’s embraced it.” The Giants are also monitoring the recovery of running back Cam Skattebo from a dislocated ankle and fractured tibia, with running backs coach Ladell Betts expressing confidence in his rehabilitation. Head coach Brian Daboll indicated the team will work with available players to fill the gaps, and officials will continue to evaluate all options as the trade deadline nears.
