Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport (2027)

Volkswagen has pulled the curtain back on the second-generation Atlas Cross Sport for the 2027 model year, treating its style-focused, two-row mid-size SUV to a comprehensive overhaul. Riding on an updated version of the MQB Evo architecture shared with its larger three-row sibling, the new Cross Sport retains its foundational wheelbase while trimming 5.4 inches of length from the rear overhang and lowering the roofline by 2.1 inches. The result is a dramatically raked rear glass and a flush tailgate design that exchange the previous generation's bulky character lines for a much cleaner, more athletic fastback stance. Up front, all trims except the base model feature an illuminated VW badge flanked by stacked LED headlights and available double light lines that project a distinct nighttime signature.

Beneath the squared-off hood lies an all-new engine variant: the EVO5 version of Volkswagen's turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter EA888 four-cylinder. Utilizing the Miller cycle and a variable-geometry turbocharger, the powerplant produces 282 horsepower—representing a 13-hp gain over its predecessor—alongside 258 pound-feet of torque. Power is managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission, with both front-wheel drive and 4Motion all-wheel drive configurations available across the SE, SE Tech, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line trim ladder. Though official EPA figures remain pending, efficiency gains from the EVO5 updates are projected to yield roughly 25 mpg combined for front-wheel-drive variants and 23 mpg for all-wheel-drive models.

Cabin refinements represent one of the most prominent shifts for the vehicle. Passenger comfort is further elevated through standard 12-way driver seats with enhanced lumbar support, while upper tiers offer Varenna or Nappa leather upholstery, rear sunshades, and full-back massage functionality.

Despite the extensive styling and comfort upgrades, the vehicle arrives without a hybrid powertrain option in its lineup. Scheduled to launch in early 2027, the revamped crossover balances its focus on upscale aesthetics and upgraded technology against a familiar combustion-only mechanical foundation, leaning heavily on its visual overhaul and cabin luxury to capture buyers in the competitive two-row SUV segment.
