Audi A2 E-Tron Debuts As A Small EV With Seriously Big Range

More than twenty years after the original model vanished from showrooms, Audi is bringing back the A2 nameplate for a European autumn launch in late 2026. The new A2 E-Tron arrives as an all-electric compact hatchback that leans heavily into unconventional proportions and obsessive aerodynamic engineering to deliver a preliminary WLTP range of up to 401 miles. Starting at €38,350 in Germany, the small EV is built around a platform that prioritizes efficiency without turning the vehicle into an extreme, unwieldy visual experiment. Measuring 170.1 inches long and 61.0 inches tall, the car features short overhangs and a gently sloping roofline designed to maximize interior volume while cheating the wind.

Aerodynamics dictate nearly every square inch of the exterior shape. Audi engineers achieved a drag coefficient of 0.24, the lowest among the brand's compact models, by incorporating an almost fully enclosed underbody, active front air intakes, and specialized wheel arch details that suppress turbulence. Even the door handles are fully electric, utilizing haptic sensors and a wing-like profile that merges seamlessly into the body sides. When cruising at higher speeds, the active cool-air intake remains shut to minimize drag, opening only during rapid acceleration, high summer temperatures, or charging cycles to protect the electronics and battery pack.

Beneath the skin, the vehicle relies on advanced battery chemistry and thermal software to stretch every kilowatt-hour. Audi offers 52.0-, 61.0-, and 84.0-kWh battery options. For configurations utilizing the 140-kW power level and an optional efficiency package, preliminary energy consumption drops to 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometers. The automaker utilizes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells in a cell-to-pack arrangement, bonding them directly into the housing to maximize packing density. Because LFP chemistry ages more slowly and boasts a flat voltage curve, drivers can routinely charge the battery to 100 percent in everyday use without accelerating degradation.

Despite its strong technical credentials and impressive European positioning, prospective buyers in North America will likely miss out, as current release plans target European markets exclusively.
