President Donald Trump reacted with sharp criticism on Friday to a Supreme Court ruling that struck down a portion of his tariffs, accusing the justices of being “ashamed” and influenced by “foreign interests.”
“I am ashamed for some of the members of the Court, totally ashamed, because they didn’t have the courage to do what was right for our country,” the President stated to reporters at the White House, visibly angered by the decision. The ruling represents a significant setback for Trump’s economic policies and a challenge to the expansion of executive power.
The former real estate developer personally attacked six of the nine justices who supported the ruling, labeling them “idiots” and “lapdogs” serving the “radical left.” He questioned their “patriotism” and “loyalty” to the Constitution.
Progressive Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson, Chief Justice John Roberts – considered a moderate conservative – and Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch, both appointed by Trump during his first term (2017-2021), deemed the “reciprocal” tariffs launched by Trump last year as “illegal.”
Vice President J.D. Vance joined the forceful rebuke, writing on X: “The Court is simply lawless.”
Court of Last Resort
The Supreme Court – known as SCOTUS – is the final court of appeal in the U.S. Legal system, and its decisions are binding. The decision in this case, Learning Resources Inc. Vs Trump, brought by a coalition of small businesses and twelve states, is expected to be a landmark case studied in law schools for years to come.
The Court interprets the Constitution and renders decisions with far-reaching consequences across numerous areas, from environmental regulations to abortion rights and presidential immunity. This particular ruling casts uncertainty over Trump’s economic agenda and diplomatic strategy.
Trump described the decision as “ridiculous,” “flawed,” and “terrible.” According to the Wall Street Journal, the President was informed of the ruling during a breakfast meeting with governors on Friday, asking, “So, it’s lost?” before openly criticizing the decision and cutting the meeting short to prepare a press conference.
A CNN reporter reported a source saying Trump expressed his anger, referring to the courts as “these freaking courts.” He accused the Court of being guided by “foreign influences,” but offered no specifics, stating only, “You’ll see” when asked if he would investigate.
“Genius”
Trump was specifically questioned about Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch, both of whom he appointed and who voted against his tariffs.
“I think their decision is terrible. I think it’s an embarrassment to their families, frankly,” he said, known for demanding unwavering loyalty from those he supports.
“These gratuitous and personal attacks are more than a breach of decorum and courtesy. They reveal his profound misunderstanding of the separation of powers and of democracy itself,” commented Steven Schwinn, a constitutional law professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Trump praised the three dissenting conservative justices, thanking and congratulating Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Brett Kavanaugh for their “strength and wisdom.” He even lauded Brett Kavanaugh as a “genius,” reading passages from his dissenting opinion. Kavanaugh, nominated by Trump, was narrowly confirmed by the Senate in 2018 after facing accusations of sexual assault.
