Trump’s Nominee for Whistleblower Protection Office Withdraws Amidst Racist Text Scandal

Paul Ingrassia, President Trump’s nominee to lead the Office of Special Counsel, has withdrawn his nomination following the surfacing of deeply offensive text messages.

The withdrawal came yesterday, October 21, 2025, after reports detailed Ingrassia’s disparaging remarks, including a statement referring to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as belonging “in hell.” Texts also revealed Ingrassia’s admission to having a “Nazi streak,” according to reporting by Politico. The Office of Special Counsel is responsible for protecting federal employees who report waste, fraud, and abuse, and Ingrassia’s views raised serious questions about his ability to impartially fulfill that role.

The text messages, which circulated widely, prompted immediate calls for Ingrassia to withdraw from consideration. His nomination had already faced scrutiny from Democrats and government watchdogs. This incident highlights the importance of thorough vetting processes for high-level government appointments, as detailed by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics.

Ingrassia’s withdrawal leaves the Office of Special Counsel without a permanent leader, continuing a period of uncertainty for the agency. A White House spokesperson stated that the administration will “promptly identify a new nominee” to fill the position.
