The U.S. military is preparing to intercept drug traffickers on land as part of an escalating effort to disrupt the flow of narcotics from Venezuela, President Donald Trump announced Thursday. The move comes after weeks of increased military activity in the Caribbean and Pacific, where American forces have destroyed more than 20 boats allegedly linked to Venezuelan drug cartels.
“Probably you’ve noticed that people don’t want to deliver by sea anymore, and we’re going to start catching them on land,” Trump said during a Thanksgiving Day call with service members. “It’s easier on land, frankly, but that’s going to start very soon. We’re warning them, don’t send the poison into our country.”
The president, speaking from Florida, did not detail the specifics of the planned land operations. He highlighted recent successes in disrupting maritime drug trafficking, stating that more than 80 individuals allegedly involved in the trade have been killed since September 1st in the destruction of the vessels.
“In recent weeks, you’ve been working to stop the Venezuelan drug traffickers, of which there are many,” Trump told the troops. “Of course, there aren’t many coming by sea anymore.”
“We’re Going to Take Care of the Situation”
Trump justified the military actions by asserting that the alleged drug traffickers are “sending their poison into the United States, where they kill thousands of people a year.”
“But we’re going to take care of the situation. We’re doing a lot already. We’ve almost stopped it. We’ve stopped 85% of it coming by sea,” he said.
The statements come amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela. Washington has deployed its largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, to the Caribbean since November 16th and on Monday designated the Cartel de los Soles, a group allegedly linked to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, as a terrorist organization. This move underscores the U.S. government’s increasing concern over the alleged connection between the Maduro regime and illicit drug activity.
Trump has previously indicated he has not yet made a decision on whether to bomb infrastructure in Venezuela or directly target Maduro, but suggested he “could talk to him to save a lot of lives,” a conversation that Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab indicated would be “welcome” on Tuesday.
The U.S. Air Force confirmed Wednesday that American B-52H bombers conducted demonstration flights over the Caribbean on Monday.
