Public health officials are investigating a confirmed case of contagious tuberculosis at the University of Rouen’s Pasteur campus, first identified in November 2025. The regional health agency (ARS) is working to identify and screen possibly exposed individuals, with approximately 150 students and 15 faculty members currently considered potential contacts. This follows a similar case detected at the same campus in late 2024, prompting increased monitoring for the disease in the area.

A confirmed case of contagious tuberculosis has been identified at the University of Rouen’s Pasteur campus in November 2025, according to information confirmed by the regional health agency (ARS). An investigation is currently underway to assess potential exposure and prevent further spread of the disease.

Approximately 150 Potential Contacts Identified

Following the initial report, the antituberculosis center (Clat) of Seine-Maritime conducted an investigation. This effort identified around 150 students and approximately 15 faculty members as potential contacts. The ARS reports that Clat teams have been providing information to these individuals and offering tuberculosis screening.

The regional health agency emphasizes that individuals who have been in contact with the confirmed case do not need to take any specific preventative measures beyond following recommended guidelines for respiratory symptoms. This is important to note, as tuberculosis is not as easily spread as illnesses like the flu or measles.

For reasons of respecting medical confidentiality and privacy, ARS Normandie will not provide any comment regarding the individual situation of the person concerned.

The epidemiological investigation led by Clat is ongoing, and the ARS will continue to be updated on the progress of screening efforts and the investigation’s findings.

Understanding Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, most commonly affecting the lungs. It spreads through the air when a person with an active respiratory infection coughs, speaks, or sings. While contagious, tuberculosis requires prolonged, close contact – typically several hours over days or weeks – to transmit effectively. Not everyone exposed to tuberculosis will become ill.

In Normandy, 154 cases of tuberculosis were reported in 2023, with 77 of those occurring in Seine-Maritime. This recent case at the University of Rouen follows a similar detection at the same campus in late 2024, highlighting the importance of continued vigilance and public health monitoring.
