The regional Civil Protection office warns that gale-force winds are expected too impact travel and potentially cause damage to structures across north-central Italy. Residents in the affected municipalities-a list of which includes major cities like Florence and Prato-are urged to take precautions as the storm system moves through the region, with conditions expected to worsen into Monday evening. The alert is active from 1 p.m. local time on january 19th and will remain in effect until further notice.

FLORENCE, Italy — A yellow alert for strong winds has been issued for several areas of Tuscany, Italy, beginning Monday, January 19th, at 1 p.m. local time. The alert, issued by the regional Civil Protection office, signals a potential for disruptive conditions across the north-central plains of the region.

Forecast

The warning comes as northeastern air currents are expected to intensify over Tuscany, with gale-force winds developing throughout Sunday, January 18th, and continuing into Monday. The areas affected include the Florence area, the Bisenzio-Ombrone Pistoiese basin, the Lower Valdarno, and the Valdelsa-Valdera.

In addition to the wind, light rainfall is forecast for the eastern Apennine slopes and temporarily between the island of Elba and the lower Archipelago through Sunday and Monday. Later Monday afternoon, snowfall is possible, initially above 1,000-1,200 meters, and decreasing to around 500 meters in the evening over the Alto Mugello and eastern slopes of the Apennines.
