Polish Prime Minister Signals Intensified Scrutiny of Previous Government

“The reckoning is entering a decisive phase. The state is acting patiently, consistently, and in accordance with the law. There are no sacred cows. The innocent have nothing to fear. The guilty, quite the opposite,” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Tusk Promises to Expedite Investigations into Alleged Misconduct

“For eight years, politicians from PiS brazenly robbed Poland. They did so very cleverly, as Minister Marcin Horała said, by following procedures,” Tusk stated during an October 30th appearance on the “Pytanie dnia” program. “We are encountering either things that comply with procedures, or very trivial thefts and abuses. More to come, and Minister Waldemar Żurek has the temperament to overcome obstacles,” he added. The move comes as political accountability becomes a central theme in European politics.

Public Opinion Divided on Prioritizing Past Government Accountability

Holding the Law and Justice (PiS) party accountable was a key promise made by Donald Tusk during the 2023 election campaign. A recent poll conducted in October by SW Research for Onet asked respondents whether the Tusk government should prioritize investigating the previous administration.

41.6% of respondents said they believe the government *should* make investigating the PiS party a top priority. A nearly identical percentage – 39.6% – indicated that such investigations should *not* be a priority.
