Sharks Scratch Rookie Misa From Lineup Against Devils
San Jose Sharks forward Michael Misa will not play against the New Jersey Devils today, October 30, 2024, despite a strong showing in his recent games, as the team manages his playing time and navigates roster constraints.
Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky cited a busy week of games as a factor in the decision, with San Jose playing four games in seven days. “A lot of hockey this week, so got to manage it,” Warsofsky said. However, he also acknowledged Misa’s performance in the first period against the Los Angeles Kings wasn’t up to par, stating, “Urgency from the puck drop wasn’t as great. It’s a hard league to play in.” Misa had eight shots in just over 10 minutes of ice time in that game.
Beyond game management and performance, a key consideration is Misa’s contract status. The Sharks currently have 49 of their 50 allowable contracts, and both Misa and defenseman Sam Dickinson are nearing the 10-game mark, after which their contracts will become non-slide-eligible and count against the team’s total. This limit can significantly impact a team’s flexibility to make trades or sign players. Dickinson is playing in his ninth NHL contest tonight, while Misa is at six. Patrick Giles will take Misa’s place in the lineup. For more on NHL contract rules, see CapFriendly.
Alex Nedeljkovic will start in goal for the Sharks, and Shakir Mukhamadullin will return to the lineup after Adam Gaudette was placed on IR. Warsofsky joked about Dickinson’s performance expectations, saying he needs to score “six goals” to justify playing time. The game against the Devils, currently 8-2-0, begins at 7 PM PT at SAP Center and will be broadcast on NBC Sports California. You can find the Sharks’ full lineup here.
Warsofsky indicated the team is evaluating players on a game-by-game basis as they navigate a challenging early season schedule.
