The University of Chile will once again open the doors of Estadio Nacional to the public for a large-scale musical performance, continuing a tradition that began with a December 2024 rendition of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. On January 17th, the iconic venue will host a free performance of carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” featuring the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Chile and the Coro Sinfónico Universidad de Chile. The concert also serves as a celebration of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Chile’s 85th anniversary.

The University of Chile is set to once again transform the Estadio Nacional into a massive concert venue, following the success of their December 2024 performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. This time, the iconic stadium will host a free performance of Carl Orff’s monumental work, “Carmina Burana,” on January 17th.

On December 22, 2024, the Estadio Nacional resonated with music as the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Chile and the Coro Sinfónico Universidad de Chile delivered a stunning rendition of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, drawing a crowd of over 35,000. The event was a gift from the University to the public, bringing culture to a wide audience.

Now, the University of Chile and Bizarro Live Entertainment are bringing another large-scale musical event to the nation’s capital with “Carmina Burana,” one of the 20th century’s most recognizable choral works. The performance will take place on Saturday, January 17th, starting at 7:30 PM, and, like the Beethoven concert, will be free and open to the public.

“We are delighted to invite the public to enjoy the Carmina Burana concert, performed by the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Chile and the Coro Sinfónico Universidad de Chile, at the Estadio Nacional on January 17th,” said Rosa Devés, Rector of the University of Chile.

Devés added, “Following our tradition, this spectacle will be free and open to all. At the University of Chile, we understand access to art and culture as a public good, and we reaffirm our commitment to widely sharing the artistic excellence of our heritage ensembles.”

Dominique Thomann, director of the University of Chile’s Centro de Extensión Artística y Cultural, emphasized that this year’s performance will feature “a beautiful program, widely appreciated and requested, such as Carmina Burana, a work that speaks about the fortunes of life, about the good and bad things that can happen. In that sense, we invite everyone to participate in this free event at the Estadio Nacional, a symbolic place that we are happy to fill with music once again.” She also noted that “with this concert, we also want to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Chile. It’s a significant anniversary, one we want to share with the public, and where we will also remember maestro Rodolfo Saglimbeni.”

Daniel Merino, Entertainment Manager at Bizarro Live Entertainment, added: “For Bizarro, it’s an honor to once again join the University of Chile on a project of this magnitude, which not only fills the Estadio Nacional with music but also reaffirms that art and culture can reach thousands of people for free. Carmina Burana is a powerful experience, and we want the audience to have an unforgettable night, safe and of excellent technical and artistic quality.”

The work, composed by German composer Carl Orff, will be performed by the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Chile, conducted by guest maestro Carlos Vieu, and the Coro Sinfónico Universidad de Chile, led by Juan Pablo Villarroel, alongside the voices of soloists Tabita Martínez (soprano), Moisés Mendoza (countertenor), and Pablo Oyanedel (baritone).

Juan Pablo Villarroel, director of the Coro Sinfónico Universidad de Chile, explained that “Carmina Burana has become one of the most beloved works by the public for many years. It possesses an easy-to-hear language due to its beautiful modal melodies and a rhythm with a very attractive primitivism, which hooks the listener throughout the work.” He added, “The solos, very technically demanding, are a constant challenge for the vocal soloists, and the large number of percussion instruments form a palette of colors that can be found in few works.”

Alberto Dourthé, concertmaster of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Chile, said that for each member of the orchestra, “the experience of ‘Ode to Joy,’ with Beethoven’s Ninth, is a wonderful memory. Returning to the Estadio Nacional, now with Carmina Burana, in a spectacle where the public participates in its silence, in its emotion, in its applause, allows us to truly reach many more people, because there are thousands of them, and that spectacle is not only for the public but also for us is a moment of indescribable emotion.”
