Meta Introduces Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and Meta AI to Ensure Total Conversation Privacy
In a move to address growing user concerns regarding the privacy of AI interactions, Meta announced on May 13, 2026, the launch of Incognito Chat with Meta AI. The new feature, rolling out across WhatsApp and the dedicated Meta AI app over the coming months, is designed to provide a completely private environment for users to interact with artificial intelligence.

Built upon WhatsApp’s existing Private Processing technology, Incognito Chat creates temporary conversations that are invisible to outside parties. According to the company, this mode is “truly private,” ensuring that no one—including Meta itself—can read the conversations. This represents a significant shift in AI interaction, moving toward a model where the service provider is mathematically or architecturally barred from accessing user queries.
The feature is specifically aimed at users seeking guidance on deeply personal or sensitive matters. Meta highlighted several use cases, such as asking for career advice, discussing loan details, or inquiring about health issues, as areas where users require a space to explore ideas without the fear of their data being monitored or stored.
Unlike standard AI interfaces, Incognito Chat sessions operate within a secure environment that Meta cannot access. These conversations are not saved, and by default, messages are set to disappear. This “privacy-by-design” approach signals a broader industry trend where Big Tech is under increasing pressure to decouple AI utility from data collection.
Beyond the standalone incognito mode, Meta also revealed plans to expand its private AI integration. In the coming months, the company will introduce Sidechat, which will also be protected by Private Processing. Sidechat is intended to provide private assistance within existing WhatsApp conversations, allowing users to get AI help based on the context of a discussion without interrupting the primary chat flow.
The rollout of Incognito Chat is expected to continue across WhatsApp and the Meta AI app throughout the next few months.
