Unreal Tournament, alongside titles like Quake III Arena, fundamentally reshaped online gaming. Now, the 2004 installment – Unreal Tournament 2004 – is poised for a return to modern platforms. Despite being unavailable through current digital storefronts, a dedicated fan community, OldUnreal, is undertaking a project to bring the game to contemporary computers and operating systems, with the full support of Epic Games. This follows Epic’s previous approvals for similar revivals of the original Unreal (1998) and Unreal Tournament 99.
The OldUnreal team will compile an installation package for UT2004, incorporating the original game files from the disc and all previously released patches. However, the project doesn’t stop there. OldUnreal intends to address existing bugs and implement improvements, releasing updates to modernize the game and ensure compatibility with Windows Vista and newer versions, Linux x86-64, aarch64 (including Raspberry Pi), and MacOS 10.9.
Perhaps most notably, the revived game will be available for free download. Details are outlined in a recent announcement, including a comprehensive FAQ. A test version of UT2004 is expected to arrive within two months, with a target release timeframe of February 2026. The FAQ also confirms that both patched and unpatched versions of the game will support multiplayer functionality.
