India’s UPI Payment System Expands Globally with PayPal Integration

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) took a major step toward international adoption today, as PayPal announced its integration with the platform, enabling international transactions for the first time.

The announcement, made at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, positions UPI as a key component of India’s growing economic and diplomatic influence. PayPal CEO Alex Chriss stated at the event, “Everywhere I go, India comes up,” highlighting the country’s increasing prominence as a hub for talent, investment, and commercial opportunities. This integration allows users worldwide to utilize UPI for payments through the PayPal platform.

Just yesterday, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal launched UPI in Qatar, marking the eighth international destination to join the network, and emphasizing growing economic ties between the two nations. According to the Indian government, UPI already processes over 640 million transactions daily, surpassing Visa’s 639 million, and is becoming a crucial tool for both Indian travelers and the large flow of remittances to the country – India was the top recipient of remittances in 2024, receiving $129 billion according to World Bank estimates. Experts are calling this expansion “India’s fintech diplomacy.”

The move is expected to significantly lower transaction costs for cross-border payments, potentially saving billions in fees currently taken by traditional banks and exchange services. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) plans to extend UPI to over 20 countries by March 2029, further solidifying its position in the global financial landscape; you can learn more about UPI on their official website. Officials stated that the government anticipates continued expansion and increased efficiency in international financial transactions.
