Indian Bodybuilder Varinder Singh Ghuman Dies at 42 After Cardiac Arrest
Famed Indian bodybuilder and actor Varinder Singh Ghuman died earlier this week at the age of 42 following a cardiac arrest during surgery, according to reports from Indian news outlets.
Ghuman was hospitalized at Fortis Hospital in Amritsar after rupturing a chest muscle, and had previously been experiencing shoulder pain. He rose to prominence in the bodybuilding world, earning the title of Mr. India in 2009 and placing second in Mr. Asia the same year. He was also the first Indian to receive a professional card from the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB), and was later recruited by Arnold Schwarzenegger to promote his health products in Asia.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Ghuman transitioned into acting, appearing in four films, including the recent blockbuster “Tiger 3,” which grossed approximately $52 million worldwide. Senior Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, “Hearing the news of the sudden demise of Punjab’s famous bodybuilder and actor Virender Singh Ghuman ji has left my heart very saddened,” and praising Ghuman’s dedication to representing Punjab on the global stage. His passing represents a loss for both the fitness and entertainment industries in India.
Standing at 6-foot-2 and once weighing 287 pounds, Ghuman was a significant figure in the Indian bodybuilding community. Authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding his death, but are continuing to investigate.
