At least 11 people, including a baby and three children, were rescued from a burning vehicle on the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway in Kerala’s Idukki district on Saturday, April 25, 2026.

The fire broke out near Gyapp Road, close to the Loharattu Estate, when a car traveling from Tamil Nadu’s Chennai caught fire. Passengers managed to escape after bystanders broke the vehicle’s windows to pull them out.

All occupants were taken to a private hospital in Munnar for treatment. No fatalities were reported in the incident.

The highway has experienced multiple disruptions recently, including landslides and ongoing repair work on a 13-kilometre stretch between Iruttukanam and Randam Mile due to safety concerns from mudslides and soil erosion.
