A new contender has emerged in the crowded survival game genre with the October 25th Early Access launch of VEIN on Steam. The independently developed title is already drawing comparisons to established hits like Valheim and Fallout due to its immersive open world and focus on realistic survival elements. Developed by a small Canadian studio, Ramjet Studios, VEIN aims to deliver a uniquely challenging experience with interconnected systems and a commitment to long-term growth-perhaps spanning five or more years.
A new zombie survival sandbox game, VEIN, has garnered significant positive attention since its October 25th launch into Steam Early Access. The game distinguishes itself with its open-world exploration, cooperative multiplayer, and a focus on realistic survival mechanics. Players and critics are already drawing comparisons to titles like Valheim and Fallout.
VEIN challenges players to scavenge for resources, construct shelters, craft tools, and endure the dangers of a zombie-infested world. The game’s commitment to realism has sparked considerable discussion, with several unique mechanics setting it apart. These include:
-
The inability to open canned goods without a can opener, forcing players to carefully consider their resourcefulness.
-
A health system impacted by dietary choices, where a limited diet can lead to deteriorating health.
-
A dynamic world that progresses through all four seasons.
-
Structures and facilities that naturally degrade over time, requiring ongoing maintenance.
-
Advanced AI that reacts to player actions – gunfire attracts nearby zombies, and vehicles can quickly become surrounded.
The interplay of these immersive systems creates a high-pressure survival experience that demands careful planning and collaboration. This level of detail is increasingly common in the survival genre, as developers strive for more engaging and challenging gameplay.
A major update, version 0.020, released in early October, refined zombie behavior and optimized global illumination and performance.
Steam players interested in survival games have responded positively to VEIN’s detailed and demanding gameplay. “Many things are troublesome, but that’s what makes it fun,” one player commented. Others praised the game’s well-developed survival elements and depth, noting it avoids the pitfalls of many similar titles. While the game currently lacks Chinese language support, the development team has indicated that adding more languages is a priority based on wishlist numbers.
The current Early Access version includes character creation, a full RPG stat and leveling system, and both Player versus Environment (PvE) and Player versus Player (PvP) combat with multiplayer connectivity. Players can explore the open world, gather resources, farm, cook, craft items, and build complex systems like power grids and water supplies to fortify their bases.
The developers emphasize that VEIN features over a hundred interconnected systems within a 4×4 kilometer explorable area (comprising four towns and natural regions). They strongly encourage players to try the demo to understand the core gameplay loop.
The demo offers unrestricted access, albeit within a smaller playable area, and caps player levels at 50 (compared to 100 in the full version). It will also receive the same updates and bug fixes as the full game.
VEIN is being developed by Ramjet Studios, a team based in Canada. The developers state that all game content is created in-house, and they opted for an Early Access release on Steam to secure additional resources and manpower for continued development.
Plans for the full release include a 14×14 kilometer map, the addition of Non-Player Characters (NPCs), bandits, settlements, a trading system, and a story-driven world with a multi-year timeline. The developers also intend to significantly improve the game’s visual fidelity, including character models, zombies, weapons, and animations.
The team estimates that VEIN will require at least five more years of development to reach a fully functional state, and they have committed to “indefinitely continuing the development of this game.” Interested players are encouraged to try the demo and add the game to their Steam wishlist.
