Even as Lando Norris celebrates his 2025 Formula 1 World Championship title, attention remains focused on his primary rival, Max Verstappen, and the factors behind his continued success. In a recent appearance on the “Beyond The Grid” podcast, four-time champion Sebastian Vettel offered insight into what separates Verstappen from his competitors, citing not only raw speed but also a remarkable level of mental strength and ongoing progress. The discussion highlights a growing appreciation within the sport for the psychological demands placed on drivers, alongside traditional metrics of performance.

Four-time Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel believes Max Verstappen’s relentless drive and mental fortitude are the keys to his continued dominance in the sport. Speaking on the “Beyond The Grid” podcast, Vettel highlighted Verstappen’s ongoing development as a driver, even at the peak of his powers.

“The scariest thing is that he continues to get better,” Vettel said. “We know he’s very good, but he’s still developing, still hungry for success, and willing to learn. He works incredibly hard behind the scenes, and that’s one of the main reasons why he’s so strong.”

Despite often piloting a Red Bull car that wasn’t technically on par with the McLaren machines of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri for much of the 2025 season, Verstappen secured the most race wins and pole positions. Vettel attributes this success to the Dutchman’s unwavering mental strength.

“The main thing is his head,” Vettel explained. “When it matters, he stays calm, rarely makes mistakes, and delivers when it’s needed. Everyone feels the pressure, but Max is able to put it aside and focus on what’s essential.”

The German driver also noted a maturation in Verstappen’s driving style over the years. Where he once aggressively pursued every opportunity, he now demonstrates a greater ability to assess the significance of each moment on the track. This strategic shift has further cemented his position as a top competitor.

Vettel also praised 2025 champion Lando Norris, commending his courage in openly discussing mental health. “We are all human, and it’s good that this is also shown in motorsport,” Vettel emphasized. This acknowledgement of the importance of mental wellbeing is gaining traction within the high-pressure world of Formula 1.
