Volkswagen unveiled its long-awaited ID.Polo electric hatchback on December 17, 2025, signaling a shift in the automaker’s design philosophy and a move towards more accessible electric vehicles. The new model, set to reach customers in 2026, represents the first of Volkswagen’s entry-level models to enter series production.

The company shared key specifications for the ID.Polo, including its dimensions and projected range. The vehicle measures 4.05 meters in length with a wheelbase of 2.6 meters, designed to maximize interior space. Volkswagen anticipates a luggage capacity of 435 liters, a significant increase from the 351 liters offered in the conventional Polo, emphasizing the vehicle’s versatility.

Initially, the ID.Polo will be available in three power output options: 114, 133, and 208 horsepower, with a GTI version planned for future release. This launch comes as Volkswagen faces increased scrutiny over the design of its vehicle interiors, particularly regarding the proliferation of touch surfaces and complex multimedia systems.

Volkswagen’s leadership in Wolfsburg has responded to criticism from both automotive reviewers and customers, and the ID.Polo’s interior represents a departure from recent designs. A key change is the reintroduction of physical buttons for primary functions, including climate control. The move reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry towards prioritizing user-friendly interfaces and tactile controls.

According to Thomas Schäfer, brand head, the ID.Polo marks the beginning of a new generation of Volkswagen electric vehicles. The changes implemented in the ID.Polo are expected to be rolled out across the entire VW model range, and potentially to other brands within the Volkswagen Group. This strategic shift underscores the company’s commitment to addressing consumer feedback and improving the overall driving experience.
