Volkswagen has unveiled the Jetta X electric SUV concept in China, marking a strategic push to expand its presence in the world’s largest auto market with affordable electric vehicles. The concept was revealed during Volkswagen Group’s Media Night on April 21, 2026, ahead of the Beijing Auto Show. It represents the first model under the Jetta brand’s new energy vehicle (NEV) initiative, which aims to launch four electrified models by 2028, including both plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles. The Jetta X features a rugged “Modern Robust” design language, with narrow LED headlights spanning the front fascia, pronounced fenders with trapezoidal wheel arches and black cladding, and red tow hooks integrated into both front and rear bumpers. The interior follows a minimalist layout, centered around large touchscreens and minimal physical controls. Although Volkswagen did not disclose technical specifications such as battery size, range, or powertrain details, the company confirmed the Jetta X is a pure electric concept and that the first mass-produced model from the Jetta NEV lineup will go on sale later in 2026. Jetta operates as a separate entry-level brand under FAW-Volkswagen in China, having sold low-cost internal combustion engine sedans and SUVs since 2019. The brand is now targeting China’s rapidly growing NEV segment, with pricing aimed at the 100,000 yuan (approximately $14,700 USD) level to compete with domestic automakers like BYD. Volkswagen has set a mid-term sales target of 400,000 to 500,000 Jetta-branded vehicles annually as part of its broader electrification offensive in China, which includes over 20 electrified models planned for 2026 and up to 50 by 2030. The Jetta X concept underscores Volkswagen’s effort to leverage the Jetta name’s recognition in China to transition from traditional combustion engines to electric mobility, reinforcing its commitment to regaining leadership in the country’s competitive auto market.
