Garmin smartwatch users can now access WhatsApp directly on their wrists, thanks to a newly released app available in the Connect IQ™ Store. The integration, announced on March 17, 2026, allows users to read, reply to, and react to messages without needing to reach for their smartphones.

The WhatsApp client on Garmin watches features a functional user interface and basic features that may be expanded over time.
The WhatsApp app for Garmin smartwatches displays the 10 most recent messages, and users can respond directly from their wrist using the built-in Garmin keyboard. The company’s press release did not mention support for voice input.
Initial Release Includes Some Limitations
Currently, the app does not support voice calls, though incoming calls will appear on the watch with a decline option. Garmin also noted that, for now, the app requires a Bluetooth connection to a paired Android or iOS smartphone, rather than operating independently via Wi-Fi. This limitation reflects the architecture of the Connect IQ platform, common to most third-party applications. However, this marks an important first step, with expectations that the app will continue to evolve and gain new features.
The WhatsApp app is not universally available across all Garmin smartwatch models, and the lack of support on some devices appears, in some cases, to be arbitrary. For example, the app is not currently compatible with the Enduro 2, Fenix 7, or Forerunner 165.

A Shift Towards Greater Smartwatch Functionality
The official WhatsApp client represents a significant upgrade for Garmin users. The app provides access to chat history and allows messages to be sent without waiting for smartphone delivery. The integration bypasses iOS notification limitations, potentially offering a consistent WhatsApp experience regardless of whether the watch is paired with an Android or iPhone. This move underscores the growing demand for seamless connectivity in wearable technology.
Previously, WhatsApp functionality on Garmin watches was limited to extending notifications from a smartphone. Deleting a notification on a smartphone would also remove it from the watch. Android users could respond to messages using pre-defined quick replies, but iPhone users were limited to simply reading and dismissing notifications.
WhatsApp is the first, and currently only, third-party messaging platform available on Garmin smartwatches, bringing the brand closer to the broader definition of a “smartwatch” while maintaining its focus on athletic performance. According to Susan Lyman, Garmin Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing, “Collaborating with WhatsApp underscores the strength and momentum of the Garmin Connect IQ ecosystem. By bringing a global messaging brand like WhatsApp to select Garmin smartwatches, we’re giving customers another meaningful way to stay connected—whether they’re training, exploring or simply on the move.” Nikhil Joshi, Director of Product Management at Meta, added, “WhatsApp helps people stay connected no matter what platform they use. We’re proud to bring WhatsApp to Garmin smartwatches, so that more people can keep their private conversations going right from their wrist.” If Garmin’s strategy remains consistent, additional communication apps of a similar nature could be added to its watches in the future.
