White House East Wing Demolished to Make Way for Ballroom

Washington D.C. – The White House East Wing is being fully demolished to construct a 90,000-square-foot ballroom, a project funded by a list of donors released yesterday.

The demolition began today, October 23, 2025, and will completely remove the East Wing, which houses offices and event spaces. The planned ballroom is significantly larger than the existing White House itself, which spans 55,000 square feet. This expansion represents a substantial alteration to the historic presidential residence.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has voiced concerns about the project, warning it would “overwhelm the White House itself.” The organization released a letter outlining its objections to the scale and impact of the construction. A list of donors contributing to the multi-million-dollar project has been made public, detailing financial support from various individuals and organizations – details of past White House renovations can be found here.

Officials stated the ballroom is intended to accommodate larger-scale events and gatherings, and construction is expected to continue through 2026.
