‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ Creators Rule Out Live-Action Adaptation
The creators of the hit animated musical film “Kpop Demon Hunters” have stated they have no current plans to pursue a live-action adaptation of the property, despite its surging popularity.
Speaking yesterday, co-director Maggie Kang explained the unique tone and comedic elements of the film are particularly well-suited for animation. “There’s so many elements of the tone and the comedy that are so suited for animation. It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world,” Kang said. “It would feel too grounded. So totally it wouldn’t work for me.”
Co-director Chris Appelhans echoed Kang’s sentiments, emphasizing the freedom animation provides in showcasing the characters’ abilities. “One of the great things about animation is that you make these composites of impossibly great attributes,” Appelhans stated. “Rumi can be this goofy comedian and then singing and doing a spinning back-kick a second later and then freefalling through the sky.” The film’s success has sparked a renewed interest in the intersection of K-pop and animation, a genre previously explored in works like Bubble Gum Crisis.
“Kpop Demon Hunters” follows a girl group who secretly battles demons while navigating the world of K-pop, and has seen three of its soundtrack songs – “Golden,” “Your Idol,” and “Soda Pop” – reach the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The film is now being considered for an Academy Award nomination. Appelhans joked, “the title alone is obviously Oscar bait,” adding, “We tried to do something new and it was really hard and I think we’re really proud of how it came out. But if people are going to reward that, that would be awesome.”
The directors indicated they are focused on exploring further creative avenues within the animated format for the franchise.
