Chinese EV maker XPeng has entered the luxury SUV market with the unveiling of its new GX model. The vehicle is notable for its design, which echoes the iconic Range Rover, and represents XPeng’s push to compete with established Western brands in the premium segment. While initially slated for launch in China with a price point around $50,000 USD, its availability in key markets like Europe remains unconfirmed as the company focuses on solidifying its domestic position.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPeng has unveiled its new flagship SUV, the GX, a vehicle that draws clear design inspiration from the Range Rover. The GX aims to position XPeng at the higher end of the market, though its availability in Europe remains uncertain.

XPeng is expanding its product line with the introduction of the GX, a large, over 5-meter-long SUV designed to be a statement of luxury. The company plans to offer multiple powertrain options for the vehicle, but has not yet confirmed European market entry.

XPeng Enters the Luxury SUV Segment

Building on the success of the XPeng G9, the new GX represents the automaker’s ambition to compete in the premium SUV space. The vehicle’s design bears a striking resemblance to the iconic Range Rover, a comparison XPeng appears to acknowledge. This move signals the company’s intent to challenge established luxury brands.

Measuring over 5.2 meters in length, the GX presents a substantial profile. The design language incorporates a rectilinear aesthetic and a low, horizontal hood, mirroring the Range Rover’s silhouette. However, XPeng differentiates the GX with a full-width LED light bar at the rear. The vehicle also features a “floating” roof effect, achieved through blacked-out B and C pillars that blend with the glass surfaces. Notably, the GX incorporates flush-mounted door handles – a feature slated to be prohibited on Chinese roads starting next year, according to reports.

Details regarding the interior remain undisclosed, but XPeng is expected to equip the GX with advanced technology features. A comprehensive digital experience is anticipated, potentially including an augmented reality head-up display integrated with the instrumentation.

The XPeng GX aims to combine luxury, comfort, and off-road capability, similar to the Range Rover.

Two Powertrain Options Planned

The XPeng GX is built on the company’s latest SEPA 3.0 platform, designed to facilitate the integration of software architecture and artificial intelligence. The SUV also features rear-wheel steering and a “by-wire” steering system, eliminating the mechanical link between the steering wheel and the wheels. This technology is increasingly common in advanced EV designs.

Detailed technical specifications have not yet been released, but homologation data is expected in the coming weeks. XPeng plans to offer two versions of the GX: a fully electric model and a range-extended electric vehicle. The latter will incorporate the “XPeng Kunpeng Super Electric System,” offering ultra-fast 5C charging and a combined range exceeding 1,000 kilometers.

The company has not announced plans to bring the XPeng GX to European markets. Currently, XPeng intends to launch the vehicle in China, where it will be priced around 400,000 yuan – equivalent to just under 50,000 USD. The launch of the GX underscores the growing competition within the Chinese EV market and XPeng’s ambition to establish itself as a premium brand.
