New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged his team’s recent playoff exit at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays, but downplayed the gap between the two American League East rivals. The Yankees, who reached the World Series last year, were eliminated by Toronto in four games.
The Blue Jays ultimately advanced to the World Series, where they battled the Los Angeles Dodgers in a thrilling seven-game series before falling just short of a championship. The series saw a combined score of 19-34 in favor of Toronto.
Speaking at the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings, Boone emphasized that the Yankees and Blue Jays finished the regular season with identical records (94-68). “I’m not trying to dismiss the fact that they played us really well,” Boone said. “They were obviously a very good team last year, a hair away from winning the World Series. They proved this year they are an even stronger club, and we’re looking to close that gap.”

Boone admitted the end of the season was difficult to process. “It’s tough, because I really believe we were a good, healthy team that was peaking at the right time,” he explained. “To lose to a Blue Jays team that we struggled against all year… that’s hard to swallow. You naturally go back and evaluate everything.”
“You always want to get better, but you also have to step back and say, ‘Hey, we’re actually pretty good.’ We have a lot of great players, and a lot of young core players who stepped up in different ways this year, and we need to continue to help them grow on their journey in the big leagues,” Boone added.
Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has previously mentioned considering “aggressive” trades to address a perceived imbalance in the team’s lineup, specifically an overabundance of left-handed hitters. Boone acknowledged the need for potential adjustments. “You’re always looking to improve, and every year is different. We’re always looking to strengthen in certain areas, to find better players, but I don’t know what this winter will bring,” he said.
The Yankees have been focused on retaining existing talent this offseason, extending qualifying offers to Trent Grisham, exercising the contract option for left-handed reliever Tim Hill, and re-signing left-handed pitcher Ryan Yarbrough. The team is also actively pursuing Cody Bellinger in free agency.
