Yemen is bracing for extreme and unusual weather conditions as strong winds buffet the vital Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key shipping lane for global trade. Reports from Yemen’s national weather center indicate that five governorates are experiencing near-polar temperatures while other regions face unexpected rainfall and turbulent seas [[1]]. These rapidly changing conditions pose a threat to vulnerable populations and are raising concerns about potential disruptions to maritime traffic in the region, already strained by ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Strong winds of 25 knots are buffeting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait as five Yemeni governorates experience exceptionally frigid, near-polar conditions, according to reports from the country’s national weather center. The extreme weather is raising concerns about maritime traffic in the strategic waterway and the vulnerability of local populations.

The national center for meteorology and early warning issued urgent advisories to citizens, stating that mountainous highlands and interior plateaus are facing intensely cold weather during nighttime and early morning hours. Dense fog is also forecast for the governorates of Taiz, Dhale, Abyan, Shabwah, and Hajjah.
