A 31-year-old neurologist was killed in a freak accident in the Villa Devoto neighborhood of Buenos Aires after her backpack became caught in the doors of a public bus. The victim has been identified as Bárbara Rocío Granado Schonholz.

The tragedy occurred on Friday, April 11, 2026, at the intersection of Chivilcoy and Nazarre. According to witness accounts, the doors of a Line 134 bus closed abruptly as Ms. Granado Schonholz was attempting to exit the vehicle. Her backpack became snagged in the door, causing her to fall onto the pavement where she was subsequently run over by the same bus.

The driver, a 41-year-old man, was detained by authorities and underwent a breathalyzer test. The incident has sparked widespread grief among the medical community and the victim’s family. The case is currently being handled by the National Criminal and Correctional Court No. 29 and Secretariat No. 152 under the classification of “homicide investigation.”

Ms. Granado Schonholz was a highly respected physician who graduated from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). She completed her hospital residency at Hospital Posadas and finalized her specialization in adult neurology at Hospital Ramos Mejía in mid-2025. In addition to her hospital work, she maintained a private practice in Villa Devoto.

The Hospital Ramos Mejía Neurology Department shared a poignant tribute to their former colleague on Instagram: “Barby, we were lucky to know you and share 4 years of residency full of work, learning and as well many laughs. We were there in the fine times and the bad, we knew how to listen to and accompany each other, and on that path we got to know each other. You will always remain in our memory. RIP.”

Her father, Carlos Granado, announced the loss on Facebook, stating, “I want to notify all my acquaintances and my relatives that the one in the photo is my daughter. Doctor, neurologist, yesterday a bus accident in Devoto snatched her away from me and she is in the judicial morgue.” Her mother, Alicia Schonholz—a physician at Hospital Posadas—also posted a tribute on Sunday, April 13, 2026, writing, “Two days ago, in a traffic accident, my beloved daughter departed. There are no words to describe so much pain!!! Fly high, my girl and thank you for being with me for 31 years.”

Police officials from the 11 B Neighborhood Police Station and the Emergency Medical Attention System (SAME) responded to the scene. The area remained cordoned off for several hours while the Mobile Criminalistics Unit and the Forensic Road Engineering Division collected evidence. This tragic event underscores the inherent risks of urban transit and the devastating impact of sudden accidents on professional communities.
